Chevy Spark tops sales projections in first 12 months
For a company that profits heavily from fullsize trucks and SUVs, Chevrolet has a surprisingly big hit on its hands with its smallest offering, the Spark. Automotive News is reporting that in its first 12 months in the US, the microcar has amassed 26,869 sales, which is 35 percent higher than the automaker originally estimated for the hatchback. The Spark has been on sale in other global markets since 2009, and Chevy has sold more than 720,000 units worldwide since its introduction.
Through May, the Korean-built Spark has sold a little more than 14,000 units putting it closer to the success of the Fiat 500 (17,562) rather than the low numbers from the Smart Fortwo (3,678) and Scion iQ (1,919). More importantly, its transaction price is the lowest in its segment (and presumably, the industry) with cars going for $14,563 on average, helping to bring new, younger customers to the Chevy brand. As for its sophomore year here in the US, there are a couple notable changes in store. First, the all-electric Spark EV will be joining the lineup, while Techno Pink paint will be dropped in favor of a new purple hue called Grape Ice.

Since I was
interested in a car 150 miles away in Delaware, the issue of trust and
information reliability was extremely important. We negotiated over the
phone and upon inspection at Nucar, after an Amtrack trip from CT, the
car was every thing Mitch M. had represented. It was one of the two most
congenial car buying experiences I've had in over 50 years of driving.
Thank you Mitch and Dan

‘Car Tip of the Week’ – Replace Your Windshield Wipers
The summertime is notorious for sudden, violent thunderstorms. When buckets of water are beating against your windshield, you need wipers that really work. Even more so at night, when a rain storm can decrease visibility to 15 or 20 feet in front of your vehicle.
Winter can be tough on windshield wipers. Ice, snow, salt and extreme temperatures make cracks and tears in the rubber that lower the effectiveness of the wipers. If your wipers are leaving visible streaks or take several passes to clear away light rain, they need to be replaced.
When replacing a wiper blade, it's better to replace the whole blade, not just the rubber part. Go to an auto parts store and they'll be able to give you the right blades for your make, model and year. If you've never replaced wiper blades before, it can be a little tricky. Just take your time, read the instructions carefully and everything should work out. It's also a good idea to observe the way your original wiper blades were attached. This may prove more valuable than anything printed on the new wiper blade box.

2014 Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra full configurators truck in
You can now put prices to your wildest option-sheet dreams of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. A microsite for the full-size pickup truck twins has been up since January, and now the full-blown configurator is live and ready to take your virtual orders. The only two chassis configurations available at the moment are the Crew Cab with either a short or standard bed - Regular and Double Cab versions will come later. In Silverado flavors that will run you $32,710 for the short box, $33,010 for the standard box, while the Sierra adds a $1,500 premium to both of those prices, and destination and handling for both models adds another $995.
Since these are American pickups the list of modifications is lengthy, but we added $11,450 in just two steps by starting with the Silverado Crew Cab and standard bed, then checking four-wheel drive and the LTZ Z71 package. Our final truck, resplendent in Brownstone Metallic paint, heated and cooled Cocoa/Dune perforated leather seating and tasty details like chrome recovery hooks, and engine block heater and LED cargo box lighting, rang up $57,285 at the candy store.
They'll be on dealer lots sometime this summer, so now's a good time to start practicing your box-checking.

‘Car Tip of the Week’ – Change Your Air Filter
Over the winter, your car's air filter can get clogged with salt and other thick debris. A clogged air filter can really lower your fuel efficiency. Replacing a dirty or clogged air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10 percent.
But how do you know when to change your air filter? The recommended interval is every 12,000 miles (19,312 kilometers), but that can be affected by the particular road and air conditions in which you drive. If you do a lot of driving on dirt or gravel roads, then your air filter is going to clog up much faster than an air filter in a vehicle that's used strictly for highway driving. The only real way to know if you need to replace your air filter is take it out and give it a quick inspection.
Interestingly, a slightly dirty air filter works better than a totally clean one. This is because the debris in the filter becomes part of the filtering process, trapping smaller particles that might have otherwise slipped past.
There's no real science to knowing when it's time to replace the filter. If it's really filthy, then it obviously needs to be changed. Otherwise, go with your gut. If you're preparing for a long summer of hard driving, then you might as well replace it. Air filters are relatively inexpensive.

2013 Chevy Volt gets $4,000-off incentive, more if you're leasing a competitor's vehicle
There was a time not too long ago when General Motors would've been happy with 1,500 Chevrolet Volt sales per month. Apparently, that time has passed.
GM is apparently looking to goose sales of its extended-range plug-in by offering rebates of as much as $4,000 per vehicle, Inside EVs says, after finding the discount on Chevy's Build Your 2013 Volt site. And if you're currently leasing a non-GM vehicle, you can get an additional $1,000 off.
Chevrolet appears to be responding to increased competition for the $39,995 Volt from other plug-in vehicles. Nissan cut the price of its Leaf battery-electric earlier this year, while Ford debuted its Fusion and C-Max Energi plug-in variants. A number of low-cost EVs are also available, mostly in California. Inside EVs notes that Chevy has about 9,000 examples of its 2013 Volts in inventory to clear out before the 2014 model arrives.
Through May, Volt sales are little changed from a year earlier at 7,157 units. We'll see how the numbers change once the next-gen Volt becomes available. We've already heard it'll be "thousands" cheaper, but we won't complain about the chance to get a better deal on one today.

Car Tip of the Week - Extreme Summer Heat Can Burn Up Car Batteries
Summer’s extreme temperatures can
destroy a vehicle’s battery. The Car Care Council advises vehicle owners to
have their cars’ batteries tested periodically and replaced, if necessary, to
avoid being stranded.
Excessive heat and overcharging
shortens the life of a battery. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, which
then damages the internal structure of the battery. A malfunctioning component
in the charging system, usually the voltage regulator, allows too high a
charging rate, which will eventually destroy a battery.
“When most motorists think of dead
batteries that cause starting failure, they think of severe winter weather, but
summer heat is the real culprit,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care
Council. “Many battery problems start long before the temperatures drop. A few
simple steps now can help you avoid the cost and inconvenience of a breakdown
later.”
To get the most life out of a battery,
the Car Care Council suggests the following:
• Be sure the electrical system is
charging at the correct rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as
undercharging.
• If your battery is the type that
needs to be topped off, check it regularly, especially in hot weather. Add
distilled water when necessary.
• Always replace a battery with one
that’s rated at least as high as the one originally specified.
• Keep the top of the battery clean.
Dirt becomes a conductor, which drains battery power. Further, as corrosion
accumulates on battery terminals it becomes an insulator, inhibiting current
flow.
